Doctors are battling to save the life of a cattle dealer, Mallam Hassan Usman, who is the vice-chairman of the Hausa Community in Igarra, headquarters of Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State at a hospital. Usman sustained several deep machete cuts from Fulani herdsmen.

On Monday, the victim was lured into a nearby bush purportedly to buy cows where the herdsmen attacked him with machetes. The development, which has heightened tension in the area, came barely a week after a farmer, Arowolo Jerome, from Igodi Quarters, Ojah village in the same Akoko Edo Local Government lost his wrist herdsmen’s attack. Usman, a cattle retailer, always goes into the forest to buy cattle from rearers which he sells to his customers.

The Chairman of the Arewa Community in the locality, Muammhed Umar Dankuruku, who confirmed the incident to journalists in Benin, said Usman’s injuries had affected his brain. He said the victim was slated for surgery yesterday, adding that Usman had remained unconscious since the attack.

Dankuruku added that after the attack, the herdsmen had been using the victim’s handset to call his contacts and family members to demand ransom on the guise that Usman was kidnapped and was in their custody. He said: “Hassan Usman used to buy cows from the Fulani people.

He was in the market on Igarra market day and two of them came to call him that they have cows to sell in the bush. On getting to the bush, they told him to bring money and he said he didn’t have money; they pounced on him and cut him with machete in more than five places.

“They collected his phone and called us that they have kidnapped Hassan. They called Audu, his younger brother, he asked them where they were, they told him they were not ready yet to tell him where they were.

After about three hours, another Fulani man was coming from inside the bush, he saw Hassan with cuts. He came to town to tell us. We went to take him to the hospital in Igarra. But we later moved him to Auchi.

The doctors said the cuts affected his brain and that he will have to be operated on this evening. “After that, these people have been using Hassan’s phone to call us and say we should come and pay them N30 million that if we don’t give them N30 million, they will kill him, they never knew that we have taken Hassan to the hospital.” The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident yesterday. He said the police were investigating the matter.[New Telegraph]
