Obaseki Announces N1m Winning Bonus for Bendel Insurance FC

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has announced a winning bonus of N1 million for Bendel Insurance Football Club.

Besides, the governor who promised to support the club both financially and morally said the bonus would enable them compete favourably and secure promotion to the elite division at the end of the current season of the Nigerian National League.

The governor gave this assurance at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium where he watched the Insurers defeat visiting Papilo FC of Owerri 2-1 at the weekend.

After two days of punching, shouting from the ringside and general hysteria, the curtains were finally drawn on the maiden edition of the South-South Open Boxing Championship last Saturday.

The boxing event was held inside the Indoor Sports Hall at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium; Benin City, a brainchild of the Edo State Boxing Association with the approval of both the Edo state Sports Council and the National Sports Commission, Zone 2 Office in Benin City, the championship was a remarkable effort in reviving and resuscitating the near moribund game of boxing in this part of the country which had hitherto been the hub of the sport in Nigeria

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has decorated eminent businessman and philanthropist, Chief Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, as its National Patron.

The honour to Chief Ubah is in recognition of his numerous contributions to the promotion, growth and development of sports in Nigeria. At the event, Chief Ubah donated a brand new 15-seater Hummer bus to the national body of SWAN and assured the Sports Writers that he would do more to enhance the growth of the association and sports journalism as a whole.

Edo SWAN Mourns Ace Journalist, Felix Okugbe

The Edo State Chapter of sports writers association of Nigeria SWAN have been engulfed by a deep sense of loss over the death of the chapter’s  former Chairman, Felix Okugbe. They described the death as a painful lost to Sports journalism as a profession. In a statement signed by Mr. Ahmed Aigbona, the incumbent Chairman, they lamented Okugbe’s death stating that Okugbe was a reservoir of knowledge which they were all tapping from.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state, who has always been a strong supporter of the annual IAAF certified 10km Okpekpe race participated in this year edition which took place a day after his wedding.  In spite of the rigorous wedding activities of the previous day, the Governor still came top in the VIP race with a time of 88 minutes.

The main race was dominated by Kenyans who made a clean sweep in the female category, while they came first and third in the male category.
