Yesterday was a tragic day for the people of Afemai as gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, reportedly struck along Benin – Auchi highway, killing a former chairman of Etsako East local government, Mr. Suleiman Afegbua.
Afegbua who was said to be traveling to Benin, the state capital, was said to have been waylaid at Ogbemudia farms, Iguevbihobo village, along the busy Benin-Auchi-Okene highway.
It was gathered that the armed men had stopped many of the motorists plying the highway and searched all occupants of the vehicles after the victims laid face down on the road.
Edo State deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, weekend urged political leaders in the state to play politics of development and not that of division, saying that the secret behind the electoral victories of the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2007 in the state was due to its developmental projects.
Shaibu who also commended his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki for insisting that ward leaders will henceforth determine would be commissioners and Specials Advisers in this administration, said the people of the state are craving for development and not divisiveness.
He stated this when he distributed empowerment materials which was part of his constituency project in his one year as the member representing Etsako Federal constituency in the House of Representatives. Some of the empowerment materials include tricycles, motorcycles, sewing machines and grounding machines which over five hundred people benefited.
The Independent Electoral Commission in Edo State has taken delivery of the sensitive materials meant for the conduct of the Etsako Federal Constituency election billed for January 28, 2017.
Briefing newsmen at the Central Bank of Nigeria premises in Benin City the Edo state capital, the Supervising Resident Electoral Commissioner for the election, Baritor Kpagih and party agents said they were satisfied with the materials brought.
“We have just taken delivery of the sensitive materials from the Central Bank and we are heading to the Local Government Areas now.
The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Benin City has admitted in evidence, an additional 1307 copies of the INEC forms EC8A, being the verified polling unit/voting Centre result sheets for additional local governments in the state.
The forms were for polling units/voting centres in Owan West, Esan Central, Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, Esan Southeast,Uhunwonde, Esan West and Orhionwon local government council areas after being admitted in evidence were labeled as exhibits by the tribunal.
The forms were tendered by Mr Yusuf Ali , SAN in his capacity as the Lead counsel at the tribunal for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize- Iyamu, in the company of several other lawyers.
In a move to calm and reassure his numerous supporter, one of the contenders for the vacant Etsako Federal Constituency House of Representative seat under the PDP platform, Mr. Victor Okhaimo took to social media to tell his supporters the true story behind the just concluded PDP primaries.
On his facebook page, Okhaimo wrote: I had shown interest to run for the position of the House of Representatives in the proposed bye election for Etsako Federal Constituency.
The timetable released by INEC in my opinion seem tight as the Commission gave 19 days notice for parties to conduct primaries, produce its candidates and embark on campaigns and eventually the elections.
Johnson Oghuma yesterday won the primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the January 28 by-election for the Etsako Federal Constituency of the House of Representatives.
The seat became vacant when Dr Pius Odubu emerged as deputy governor of Edo State in the recently held election.
Oghuma scored 334 votes to beat his only opponent, Blessing Agbomere, who polled 75 votes.
Chairman of the electoral committee, Sen. Bala Ibn Na’Allah, said 411 delegates were accredited, 409 votes were counted as valid while the remaining two were invalidated.
Former federal lawmaker at the Federal House of Representative Hon Abass Braimah, yesterday dis-associated himself from the Etsako federal constituency seat of Edo state, declared vacant following the election of the former occupant, Comrade Phillip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor.
He said though he remain active in the politics of the state but will stay away from elective positions for now in order to have time for his family and also concentrate on his business.
According him ” contrary to insinuation, I have made it abundantly and unequivocally clear that am not interested in the seat that has been declared vacant by the National Assembly.
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has set up a modality for the employment of 10,000 persons in the first phase of his 200,000 job promise, in fulfillment of his electioneering campaigns, it emerged yesterday.
Besides, government says it would establish an electronic platform that will collect revenue by the means of Point of Service (POS) or revenue scratch cards for those who do not have ATM cards.
It was learnt that Governor Godwin Obaseki had directed Heads of Local Government administration in the state to forward names of contractors initially contracted as revenue collectors to government house to jumpstart the job scheme.
Edo State Government on Friday said it has set up a committee to fine tune a proposed bill to harmonize revenue collection by local government councils in the state.
Oseni Elamah, the executive chairman of Edo State Internal Revenue Service made the disclosure shortly after meeting with the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, to newsmen in Benin- City.
Elamah said the committee will be headed by the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu while other members are Osarodion Ogie, Secretary to the State Government, the Executive Chairman of Edo State Internal Revenue Service (Oseni Elamah) and three representative of local government Heads from the three senatorial district.
The campaign posters of Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, the first son of former Governor of Edo state, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, are now in Benin and major towns in Etsako Federal constituency in Edo.
The posters were seen pasted in strategic locations in Auchi and other major communities in Etsako East, Central and West Local Government Areas.
The colourful posters have also been extended to Benin City, specifically in front of Denis Osadebe Government House as well as the state secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
