Calm Returns to Igarra after Youths Burn Down Hotel Over Woman’s Death


Calm has returned to Igarra, Akoko-Edo local council of Edo State, after days of tension over the killing of a middleaged woman  by an allegedly drunk driver, identified as Onesi Obende-Okuru. Family members of the deceased and the alleged killer were sighted in several meetings trying to mend fences.

Angry youths reportedly razed down a hotel and a building belonging to the suspect last Friday over the killing.

The deceased had joined other women on a peaceful march round the town over what they termed strange happenings in the community and to also pray for protection for those that would participate in an annual festival called Aba.

Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon Philip Shaibu, has urged the warring Weppa Wanno communities particularly those in Igiode and Iviebue in Etsako East Local Government Area of the state and their neighboring Uneme Uzano communities to love and tolerate themselves if meaningful development must take place.

ABUJA—The Supreme Court, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has dismissed the appeal by the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. It upheld the election of Governor Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The apex court consequently affirmed the concurrent verdicts of the Court of Appeal in Benin City and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which had earlier dismissed Ize-Iyamu’s case and upheld Obaseki’s victory.

Thousands of muslims  faithfuls across Edo north today joined their counterparts across the globe in the eid prayers in celebration of Eid-El-Fitri which marked the end of the month of Ramadan.

Auchi – Alhaji Aliru Momoh, the Otaru of Auchi has urged communities in the area to go into agriculture to enhance Federal Government’s efforts to diversify the country’s economy.
The monarch made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo.

Momoh said though, about 200 women in the area were into agriculture, and stressed the need for more people in the community to go into farming.

A Bill for a law to establish the Edo State Cattle Rearing and Grazing Agency on Tuesday passed second reading on the floor of the Edo House of Assembly.
