Igarra Monarch laments infrastructure decay in Akoko Edo

The Otaru of Igarra, Oba Emmanuel Saiki, has called on Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki to urgently set machineries in motion to address the infrastructural decay in Akoko Edo Local Government to give the people a sense of belonging in the present administration.

Oba Saiki made the appeal when he paid a courtesy visit on the governor at Government House, Benin City.

The Federal Government has commenced the construction of an Earth Dam at Otuo in the Owan-East Local Government Area of Edo, in line with its policy to provide potable water to rural dwellers across the country.

The Managing Director of the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority, Mr Saliu Ahmed, stated this during the flag-off ceremony of the project in Otuo on Saturday.

Ahmed said the project would be handled by Jurgen Nigeria Ltd, adding that the water scheme will serve

4,000 Applicants have Registered for Edo Employment Initiative in Auchi

A survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  has revealed that no fewer than 4,000 applicants have so far registered in Auchi, Etsako-West Local Government Area of Edo state for the state’s ongoing employment initiative.

A NAN correspondent who visited Etsako West Council’s registration centre for the initiative, reports that more job seekers were turning up for enrollment into the scheme.

NAN further reports that registration for the scheme commenced on March 8 across the 18 local government councils of the state.

Tragedy: Ex Etsako East Chairman, Suleiman Afegbua, Shot Dead by Gunmen

Yesterday was a tragic day for the people of Afemai as gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, reportedly struck along Benin – Auchi highway, killing a former chairman of Etsako East local government, Mr. Suleiman Afegbua.

Afegbua who was said to be traveling to Benin, the state capital, was said to have been waylaid at Ogbemudia farms, Iguevbihobo village, along the busy Benin-Auchi-Okene highway.

It was gathered that the armed men had stopped many of the motorists plying the highway and searched all occupants of the vehicles after the victims laid face down on the road.

Edo State deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, weekend urged political leaders in the state to play politics of development and not that of division, saying that the secret behind the electoral victories of the All Progressives Congress (APC) since 2007 in the state was due to its developmental projects.

Shaibu who also commended his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki for insisting that ward leaders will henceforth determine would be commissioners and Specials Advisers in this administration, said the people of the state are craving for development and not divisiveness.

He stated this when he distributed empowerment materials which was part of his constituency project in his one year as the member representing Etsako Federal constituency in the House of Representatives. Some of the empowerment materials include tricycles, motorcycles, sewing machines and grounding machines which over five hundred people benefited.

Suspected Ritualists Murder 62-year Old Hunchback In Owan

Four suspected ritualists who murdered a 62-year-old man and collected his hunchback in Urue village, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State have been arrested by the state Police Command.

The suspects Ajuma Sunday, 36, Peter Olotu, 38, Sunday Okoro, 62 and a native doctor Philip Ogeneka, 50, who committed the act on Sunday, January 29, 2017, are among the 27 others paraded by the state command for various crimes.

One of the suspects, Peter Olotu identified the old man as Oluma and said that he had volunteered to work in his farm for free so as to carry out the devious act.

Suspected Cultist Attack Ibillo Police Station

A woman was reportedly killed by a stray bullet when suspected cultists attacked a police station at Ibillo, in Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state.

The suspected cultists were said to have successfully freed two of their colleagues who were detained for alleged rape and ran away with them.

The attackers were said to have gained access to the police station by posing as relatives of the arrested suspects when they started shooting sporadically.

Auchi Poly staff on indefinite strike over N1.8bn salary arrears

Staff of Federal Polytechnic Auchi were on Monday forced to embark on an indefinite strike over alleged N1.8 billion salary arrears.

The staff on strike are under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP).

In addition to the strike, members of the unions also staged a protest to press home their demands. The protest however paralysed academic activities at the institution.

FG establishes renal dialysis centre in Auchi

The Federal Government has established a Renal Dialysis Centre in Auchi, Edo State for the diagnosis and treatment of kidney related diseases.

Senator Francis Alimikhena made the disclosure on Friday at the foundation laying of the centre at Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Alimikhena said the project, meant to serve the people of Edo North and Nigerians at large, would be completed within seven weeks.
